From the recording Is That Your Conscience Knocking At The Door?
Amid all the news and controversy surrounding Ed’s tour, I wrote and recorded this live in the studio this in a couple of hours on Friday 18th September. I guess I’d say that the song wrote itself.
No matter your politics or “side”, this debate raises important questions about censorship & free speech.
Is there still place for protest songs?
In a world of scroll-on… next topic…
The lyrics speak for themselves.
A passionate, heartfelt, and very personal response.
And, judging from the comments on social media, one that resonates with a lot of people.
Thank you for listening.
Lyrics
Well you started out with good intentions
Started out just fine
Avoiding all controversy, let others wave the sign
But your coat of many colours couldn’t hide a mortal sin
And your silence dressed as wisdom
Just let’s the evil win.
And we let them down, we leave them on their own
Who dares to speak is threatened and dis-owned
And never mind it’s all been said before
Is that your conscience knocking at the door?
And never mind it’s all been said before
Yes that’s your conscience knocking at the door.
Now you’re picking up the pieces
Gathering up the threads
And friendships counts for nothing
When loyalty is dead
But don’t concern yourself - let others take the blame
Just put it down to business
And hang your head in shame
and we let them down, we leave them on their own
Who dares to speak is threatened and dis-owned
And never mind it’s all been said before
Is that your conscience knocking at the door?
And never mind it’s all been said before
Is that your conscience lying on the floor?
