Lyrics
THE GLITTERING PRIZE
I used to run around thinking I was funny
talking out the back of my head
I was young, oh so young
I used to think that I was better than most
and if you only did what I said
you’d get things done - I got things done
I always knew I could compete with the best
all I had to do was try
look out world - are you ready to take my style?
but everything I ever wanted to be
was wrapped up in a glittering prize
look at me now - been standing here a while
I was born to be wilderment’s captain
I was born to be chaos theory‘s muse
I was born to be beguiled and uncertain
It’s no surprise that I was born to be confused
I used to think that it was clever to be smart
When I was showing off my cranium
what a fool, such a fool
but now I know that it’s smarter to be dumb
and the clever guys are keeping schtum
that’s the rule, as a rule
and if you want it here’s a word to the wise
don’t believe a thing I say
I’m full of contradictions and contrapuntal points of view
and every clever song you thought that I wrote
is just a load of words on play
look at me now, still rhyming them with you
I was born to be wilderment’s captain
I was born to be chaos theory‘s muse
I was born to be beguiled and uncertain
It’s no surprise that I was born to be confused
